Febr 6 at 1.30pm and already the sun is starting to go down. In Tromsø mørketid (polar night) lasts from Nov 26 to Jan 15.

Tromsø domkirke was built in Gothic revival style and completed in 1861 (architect Christian Heinrich Grosch). The cathedral is one of the biggest wooden churches in Norway.

The purple flash was so sudden and so extremely bright that it caught me unawares. I had no time to stop down or reduce the ISO and got quite a bit of lens flare. Shot with Samyang 14mm at F2.8. Colours of northern lights: Red- oxygen atoms at ca. 200km altitude, visible only at times of high solar activity Green- oxygen atoms at ca. 100 km altitude colliding with molecular nitrogen, the most common colour Blue/ purple - molecular nitrogen at lower altitudes, visible only at highest levels of solar activity and much faster than red and green en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aurora Das lilafarbene Nordlicht schoß so plötzlich und extrem hell über den Himmel, dass ich keine Zeit mehr hatte, ISO oder Blende anzupassen (deshalb die Blendenreflexe). Mit Samyang 14mm und F2,8 aufgenommen. Farben der Nordlichter: Rot entsteht in ca. 200km Höhe durch Sauerstoffatome und ist nur bei hoher Sonnenaktivität sichtbar Grün entsteht in ca.10km Höhe durch mit anderen Teilchen kollodierte Sauerstoffatome und kommt am häufigsten vor Blau/ lila entsteht durch angeregte Stickstoffatome, dafür sind jedoch extrem starke magnetosphärische Störungen erforderlich. de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polarlicht

Tromsø City library and archive was opened in 2005. The characteristic roof of the former Fokus cinema designed in the style of architect Félix Candela was retained. Die Stadtbücherei/ Stadtarchiv von Tromsø wurden 2005 eröffnet. Das charakteristische Dach des früheren Fokus- Kinos im Stil des Architekten Félix Candela wurde dabei beibehalten.

Tromsdalen is the part of Tromsø situated on the mainland. It's connected to the city centre on Tromsøya via tunnel and the 1036 m long and 36m high Tromsøbrua. On the right is the so called Arctic Cathedral which in fact is not a cathedral but just Tromsdalen parish church. Tromsdalen ist ein Stadtteil von Tromsø auf dem Festland, der durch Tunnel und die 1036m lange und 36m hohe Tromsøbrua mit dem Stadtzentrum auf Tromsøya verbunden ist. Rechts im Bild ist die sogenannte Eismeerkathedrale, die eigentlich keine Kathedrale, sondern schlicht die Pfarrkirche von Tromsdalen ist.

Ursprünglich 1973 als Focus-Kino eröffnet (Arch.Gunnar Bøgeberg Haugen), wurde das Gebäude ab 2003 völlig entkernt und, umgebaut nach den Plänen von HRTB Arkitekter AS, 2005 als Bibliothek wiedereröffnet. Beim Umbau blieb vom Kino lediglich das freitragende Betonschalendach im Stil des Architekten Félix Candela (Candela-Schale) erhalten. Rakettkiosken in Tromsø offers reindeer hot dogs and is fully licensed, but I couldn't see any pangalactic gargle blaster on offer,-) There is a bench though! HBM!
