ave[25] - running round

Shirley [12088] making her way to the other end of the train. The track is in very good order, to my eyes.

avr[25] - under the Bridge

06 Sep 2025 75
12088 [Shirley] at the eastern end of Greenrigg Halt's run-round loop. Sitting almost underneath Edgehill Bridge. . For the AVR to work trains beyond this bridge, a Transport & Works Order is needed as a very minor public road route crosses here.

avr[25] - Greenrigg Halt

Greenrigg Halt is currently [2025] the "head of steel" on the way to Alnmouth.

avr[25] - arrived at the Halt

The train has been here a couple of minutes, and the tail lamp is about to change ends ... There is a 10 minute allowance for the engine to "run around" on the loop, quite long enough to get some good pictures and to stretch legs on the platform. I think a couple of intrepid people raced up onto Edenhill Bridge for their pictures.

Long seat on Platform One at Lionheart. Bella's looking at 'Shirley' - idling gently - at the head of the short service train.

avr[25] - NER 2688

06 Sep 2025 48
NER 2688 {built 1898} 6-wheel open third. Built to Diagram 28 by the North Eastern Railway at York. It is a four section design :- a single compartment, an open saloon, a toilet and the luggage area. Withdrawn by the LNER in 1938, the coach body was grounded to form holiday accommodation. It was moved to the Beamish Museum in 1990 being featured in the colliery area and later as storage. In 2013 Beamish declared it surplus to their requirements, and it was acquired by the AVR. It was sited on Platform One and after some cosmetic work it now provides a waiting room and stationmaster’s office. A suitable underframe has now been acquired and the coach will hopefully be restored to partner the NER directors coach in the future.

avr[25] - Lionheart

06 Sep 2025 67
The running-in board for Lionheart Station of the Aln Valley Railway. This is their Western terminus, as getting back to the station in Alnwick is not possible. The track bed is occupied by recent developments and Barter Books occupy the station buildings [trainshed]. Ignore the tents, there is a special event taking place ...

STR/BDD - on the platform

rather badly cropped image due to faulty camera settings Ben on the platform outside the Crossing Cafe at Alston. Time for a short walk ...

anl - missing train

27 Dec 2024 1 1 78
Studying the station layout whilst waiting for our train back to Newcastle. The station is actually a newly built bay platform, with the double tracks of the Blyth & Tyne heading off under the road bridge towards Lynmouth Power Station [now running on biomass, not coal]

anl - old platform

27 Dec 2024 76
The cut back old platform at Ashington. Also note that it is lower and narrower than required under modern standards.

STR[H] - Hickins' [aka the Crossing Cafe]

14 Nov 2023 12 8 279
Crossing Cafe - aka Hickins - is in this end of the Station Building at Alston. This is the upper terminus of the South Tynedale Railway [STR]. Currently [2023] an extremely dog-friendly establishment, that also does a good range of drinks, cakes, snacks and light meals for humans. We are regular, if not frequent, customers.

Horden running round at Andrew's House station on the Tanfield Railway, as viewed from our reserved compartment, in the special train to celebrate the completion of Horden's restoration in June 2021.

kwv - canopy, bench and fence

Under the canopy on platform 4 at Keighley, with the train almost ready to depart. That bench has really spindly legs, imo, compared to the usual railway company designs. The "mind the gap" warning is needed, especially on the curved section of the platform by the water tower.

CAS - Sca / O&S - seat

28 Jul 2015 5 5 546
This bench in Scarborough is reputed to be the longest platform seat in England (456ft). I was there for an Esperanto Kongresso; I had to wait for the opportunity to take this ... It was restored in 2020.
