Studying the station layout whilst waiting for our train back to Newcastle.

The station is actually a newly built bay platform, with the double tracks of the Blyth & Tyne heading off under the road bridge towards Lynmouth Power Station [now running on biomass, not coal]

Lynmouth Power Station was originally designed to burn coal to generate DC power for the Alcan Smelter located only a short distance away. Alcan shut the smelter on 2012 citing energy / environmental compliance costs. The power station was shut in 2015 and by 2027 had been converted to burn biomass [imported wood pellets], in 2024 some 27 trains a week deliver the pellets in a similar fashion to the coal "merry-go-round" system.
