World Trade Center Menorah

14 Dec 2025 46 65 322
New York, NY Note: AI was used to light the remaining candles so that are are lit in the photograph. ____ This photo is dedicated to the innocent victims who died on 7 October 2023 and everyone who made the ultimate sacrifice on the battlefield as they hold back the modern-day “barbarians” – forces of evil – who continue attempts to penetrate the Gates of Western Civilization to plunge the world in a new dark ages – to extinguish the light of democracy and tolerance and that of the Abrahamic Faiths (Judaism, Christianity, and yes true Islam too). Let the examples of Carmel Gat, Eden Yerushalmi, Hersh Goldberg-Polin, Ori Danino, Alexander Lobanov, and Almog Sarusi, provide inspiration. They kept the faith and refused to allow the monsters holding them to extinguish the miracle of Hanukkah (shown by the recovered videos reported by the Jerusalem Post and Times of Israel , etc. on 11 December 2025. Having died al kiddush hashem for the sanctification of God’s name – they are a 21st century Hanukkah miracle. The ner tamid (Eternal light of God) burned brightly in each of their hearts as they walked through the valley of darkness [Tehilla:Psalm 23:4] – a path they had not chosen but accepted: “[I] n [Y] our light do we see light. ” [Tehilla/Psalm 36:9] “ You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy… [Tehilla/Psalm 16:11] “ …I shall dwell in the house of the LORD forever. ” [Tehilla/Psalm 23:6] This photo is fitting since the lit Menorah displayed in the Oculus at the World Trade Center was includes metal from the destroyed World Trade Centers on 9/11 when modern-day “barbarians” attacked New York and Washington, D.C. More information can be found in the placard photo. It should also be noted, that if God had not acted through Cyrus the Great (c. 600-530 BCE] or if the first Hanukkah miracle had not taken place (164 BCE) the world would have been polytheistic or completely secular and most of us Jew, Christian and Muslim would not have our respective faiths. Consequently John 1:5 remains true: “ The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. ” Because of this, Hanukkah in reality is a holiday for Christians and Muslims, too – a miracle to celebrate. Like that Hanukkah in 2023 when many Jewish people in my town were afraid to display their symbols because of the sudden surge of anti-Semitism that followed the cowardly 7 October genocide, my menorah as every year since, is set in place on my kitchen window for visible display to all who enter my apartment building. And if I’m asked again, “I thought you were Christian?” my answer will also be the same – “It’s my holiday too!” יהי רצון שהחג הזה יביא לך אור ושמחה! (May this holiday bring you light and joy!) Finally per the conclusion of my latest novel due out in January 2026 – The Burning Hand , which takes place in 303 BCE Israel, it should be known to the world that the dark forces of evil that seek to annihilate God's chosen people and erase them from the promised land will not succeed – not now, not ever: At the same time, even though Eliya saw clearly that the path ahead for her people would be fraught with uncertainty, she knew somehow and in ways not yet seen, all would be made right and it would work out for the best – for Yahweh had spoken and His word could not be broken – “Your word, O Lord, will last forever, it is eternal... ” [Tehillah 119:89] She also knew, “the Jewish story was not about death [or darkness]. [It] was about [light] and life” such that in the aftermath of every sorrow and catastrophe, Israel like the phoenix – the legendary and immortal bird of rebirth dating back to 8th century BCE mythology – would rise from the ashes and her people would be renewed and most importantly, LIVE . ______ Jeffrey Salkin. St. Patricks Cathedral, New York, NY And on the first of the week, about the third hour of the night, the sun was seen such as it had never at any time shone, and all the heaven was lighted up. [A] n innumerable multitude of angels cr [ied] out… saying: “Glory in the highest to God, and on earth peace, among [people] of goodwill…” [A] t their voice all the mountains and hills were shaken, and the rocks were burst asunder… [a] nd there were seen… [the] dead raised up… And all the multitude walked about, and sang praises… saying: “The Lord our God that has risen from the dead has brought to life all the dead…” [The Report of Pontius Pilate (c. 33-40 CE)] “When he was buried, they set guards upon him – yet while my soldiers watched him, he rose again on the third day… The soldiers… did not remain silent about what had happened. They testified that they saw him arisen.” [Paul Winter. A Letter from Pontius Pilate. Novum Testamentum. Vol. 7. Fasc. 1. Oculus/Freedom Tower

New York, NY Freedom Tower: Completed 2013. Height with Spire: 1776 feet. Architect: David Childs. Oculus: Completed 2016. Architect: Santiago Calatrava. Note: Due to a member question about the bottom right portion of Freedom Tower, the differences between the rest of the building as well as the appearance of smudging in the sky are optical illusions caused by the thin clouds in the sky that were faintly reflected in the sun-exposed section of Freedom Tower. The second optical illusion is caused by the dark shadow of the adjacent building that obscures the visible interior beams in the sun-illuminated section and interior office views. As this is a negative image, the shadow-impacted section is the opposite color (white vs. black) and the white wispy clouds appear as black smudges. In reality every section of Freedom Tower is alike.

Barclays Center 7 June 2020

09 Jun 2020 61 51 728
Barclays Center, Brooklyn, NY In light of the unlawful murder of George Floyd at the hands of four MPD cops and the nationwide riots, looting and acts of arson, I chose to focus on the positive with hope this time will be different and African-Americans will have their lives valued and will no longer have to live under "police-state" conditions in America. Therefore, I photographed Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s inspirational saying that is eternally relevant as well as "Black Lives Matter" posters and graffiti honoring George Floyd, the latter two digitally edited, found also in Brooklyn, NY. I did not include the looted and borded up stores around Barclays Center that include but are not limited to Shake Shack, Target, Modell's, Old Navy. I also didn't include photos of rage influenced graffiti since hopefully now these are days of healing and the beginning of a grass roots movement to create a more perfect union where human rights are respected and peoples of all diversity interact and live in peace. The LED display is located on the Barclays Center, home of the NBA's Brooklyn Nets.

Lamentations 2020

18 May 2020 76 74 921
The inspiration of this photo composition comes from Lamentations 1 since as they were relevant to the fall of Jerusalem in 586 BC, they are strikingly relevant to New York City of 2020, viewed by many as the “capital of the world.” In the grip of the COVID-19 pandemic, NYC has seen eerily empty streets, and scarce few visitors from the outside. Her businesses are shuttered and shut and cultural venues silenced. NYC has also been abandoned by many of her wealthiest who at the start of the pandemic, fled in fear. She has experienced empty shelves and been embraced by a new “Great Depression” and the consequent reality that things of value during the pre-COVID-19 era matter little today with some trading material goods for scarce necessities. Last, in her greatest time of need, NYC has been abandoned by the federal government and denied essential funding for hospitals and overtime costs, and resources such as sufficient quantities of test kits for prompt tests for all. Lamentations 1: [1] How deserted lies the city, once so full of people! How like a widow is she, who once was great among the nations! [2] Bitterly she weeps… tears are on her cheeks… [T] here is no one to comfort her. [4] All her gateways are desolate… her young women grieve, and she is in bitter anguish. [6] All the splendor has departed… Her princes… in weakness they have fled… [7] When her people fell… there was no one to help her. [11] …her people groan as they search for bread; they barter their treasures for food to keep themselves alive. [20] I am in torment within… inside, there is only death. [22] My groans are many and my heart is faint. Fortunately NYC and the world will not remain mired in this hellish pandemic forever since we are reminded in Lamentations 3:57-58: You came near when I called to You, and You said, “Do not fear!” You… took up my case; you redeemed my life! And yes, so as declared in Psalm 104:30 – “You send forth Your spirit… and renew the face of the Earth” we can be assured – “Mourning will be turned into joy!” [Jeremiah 31:13] as the COVID-19 pandemic is “swept away… like the morning mist” [Isaiah 44:22] such that “Times of refreshing may [yet] come [again] .” [Acts 3:19] Note: Created May 17, 2020 from photographs taken at Woodlawn Cemetery, Bronx, NY (May 7, 2012) and Rockefeller Center Observation Deck, New York, NY (December 23, 2016). www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/#countries NYS Re-opening Metrics: forward.ny.gov/regional-monitoring-dashboard
