A colourful view of Tŵr Mawr lighthouse on Lladdwyn Island through the old window of St Dwynwen’s Church. This is a ruined medieval church dedicated to St Dwynwen, the Welsh patron saint of lovers, often seen as the Welsh equivalent of St Valentine. It was a place of pilgrimage during the Middle Ages as archaeological work has shown traces of earlier buildings beneath the present ruins, indicating a long and complex ecclesiastical history. It has a cross shaped plan. Tŵr Mawr lighthouse is Welsh for “great tower” and started life as an unlit marker it was improved with lighting in 1846. A flight of steps on Lladdwyn Island brings us to the old ‘Great Lighthouse’ on Lladdwyn Island, Wales. Constructed in the nineteenth century, it was made redundant in 1975. There is not much to be seen close up to it other than the fantastic Snowdonia mountain range but one can walk around it and imagine strong waves in the constant winds here. Enjoy the day. Another look at Llanddwyn Bay from this wonderful little Island. We are taking a very wide view looking North with a backdrop of the mountain range of Snowdonia (Eryri). We also see the narrow tidal sandy Tombolo that allows us to get here without getting our feet too wet. The lasts photo shows us a closer look of the Tombolo and the big beach itself. This route allows visitors to and from the Island twice a day for a few hours. As can be seen on this busy bank holiday weekend, it can get quite busy here despite the distinctly cool weather we had on our visit. Our forest carpark is beyond the far right of this picture and so a long sandy walk awaits.

When one visits Lladdwyn Island, a lovely sandy beach has to be explored beforehand. From there one can do many things including taking a little sail with the children. Enjoy full the day.

With the background of Snowdonia we see here the smaller tower on this Island. It is in fact the very old Tŵr Bach Lighthouse Somewhat overshadowed by Tŵr Mawr — a fact that’s also backed up by it’s name, meaning ‘small tower’ —Tŵr Bach Lighthouse was actually the original lighthouse on Llanddwyn Island. It is believed to have been built as a landmark and day beacon (an unlit lighthouse). However, it couldn’t easily be seen by ships approaching from the west, and for that reason, another lighthouse (Tŵr Mawr) was built in its place. See PiP for Tŵr Mawr

This magical Island off the south eastern shores on the Isle of Anglesey has always been special. Almost hidden off the track by Newborough forest and its namesake Warren, it has three main structures; this shot shows the Tower, the others are the remains of the St Dwynwen church and the Lighthouse. A couple of impressive crosses complete the picture. I am stood here behind a row of four stone houses built before 1830 for the lighthouse keepers, pilots and lifeboat men. It was closed in 1943 and the lighthouse went out in the 1970’s. Best full screen Have a good weekend.

A special scene here from this wonderful Welsh Island showing the old lighthouse and the plain memorial cross. The inscription reads: “Dwynwen“; “in the sixtieth year of Queen Victoria 1897“; “in memory of St Dwynwen Jan 25th 1465“; and, “erected by the Hon F G Wynn owner of the isle“. This is about 6mtrs high. There is in fact another cross nearby too, that one being a Celtic memorial. Best full screen.

Llanddwyn Bay might not be familiar to you but it is in fact the vast sandy bay at Newborough forest, Anglesey, Wales. 25+ years since we were last here and we had hoped for better weather today, however the lighting brings out the clouds and the sand gives us a bit of colour. Enjoy full screen.
