As we sail onto the slipway here in the little port of Kinloch we get our first idea of the amount of attractions available.This is the largest of the Small Isles in the Inner Hebrides of Scotland, with the peak of Hallival in the foreground and Askival rising in the background. After landing at Kinloch on the Small Island of Rum, we head directly to the most imposing structure on this otherwise mostly barren Island. We were allowed to walk directly past the front of this, between the fence and walls, only passing 1-3 meters from the windows and being able to climb the front steps to the door. We saw that it still looked fully furnished with old ornaments and pictures now covered in sheets and cobwebs. Such a shame. This a Category A listed Edwardian mansion. Built between 1897 and 1900 as a luxury hunting lodge for the wealthy industrialist Sir George Bullough, it is constructed from distinctive red Rùm sandstone. It is Edwardian gothic/baronial in style and features ornate turrets, battlements, and lavish original interiors including a sprung-floor ballroom. It is now owned by the public nature agency NatureScot, the vacant building has required major structural preservation and has been put up for sale or restorative in recent years See PiP’s for close look at the entrance and one of the corners. As our ferry approaches the Small Island of Rum we get to see a great view of its two rugged peaks; Askival (left) and Hallival (right) . This is part of the Rum Cuillin ridge, situated within the Inner Hebrides off the west coast of the Scottish Highlands. Askival: Rising to 812 meters (2,664 ft), it is the highest peak on the Isle of Rùm and a prominent Corbett characterized by its sharp, conical profile. Hallival: Positioned immediately adjacent to the east, recognizable by its broad, stepped ridge formed from ancient layered igneous rock intrusions. Enjoy full screen

The most imposing building on the Island of Rum Is Kinloch Castle. From its old front lawns runs an old path to bordering woodland. Here are the gates. They were very stiff indicating that they have not been used for a very long time hence the rust as well. Enjoy the weekend.

One cannot imagine ‘The Small Isle’s in the Inner Hebrides being quite like this. High rugged peaks and green forest. I am on a small valley trail here which if followed entirely would lead to the top of those peaks, but not for me this time. Fortunately, someone has given some thoughts to the hiker here by providing a place of rest to admire the stunning Rum scenery. Have a perfect day.

The archipelago of The Small Isles consist of the Isles of Rum, Eigg, Canna and Muck. So here we are on the largest of them; Rum, and one very soon realises why it is a National Nature Reserve. Its permanent population is around 31 people (2022) living in and around the village of Kinloch. This photo is taken just beyond Kinloch and looks NE to show part of the Isle of Skye from the Rum Inlet. Have a perfect day.

A jump to our fourth day at Mallaig and we are here now on the Island of Rum. This was seen whilst passing through Rum's only village: Kinloch Village. Have a perfect day.
