Is it the new way of viewing our images on the front page a long line of them at the left side of the screen. I can't get it back to how it used to be ?

Looks like a CSS style went mad.

Hopefully fixed by clearing the browser cache:

Or reload it by holding shift key and then reload the page. It doesn´t seem to be a general problem for all users.

Hi! I'm finding the pictures all down the left side instead of the normal 3-wide array with the middle tab layout as well. It appears like it on my iPad in Safari, but seems to be OK in Chrome on my Windows lap-top. It was OK on both platforms previously. My iPad is an older model iPad3, so has your software been modified to only work with later models?

Unfortunately Marj has not yet replied to let us know which one worked, or if the issue got solved at all.

The bottom line is to make a "hard refresh" to clear the cache. On the following page you find instructions for several mobile devices. Scroll down for Safari:

www.sleeplessmedia.com/2016/04/20/how-to-hard-refresh-on-a-mobile-device

I hope it works.

I deleted the Ipernity Web data in the Safari Settings, turned off the iPad for a hard Reset, restarted again, then in Safari logged out of my ipernity page, and then back in again and the display is the same as before, pictures all down the left side. I have done a screen dump of one of my albums, but am not sure how to attach the picture here. i can't seem to attach it using the iPad. I may be able to send it via email if you want it.

Upload the image to ipernity and give link (url) to it here.

This starts to sound far more serious issue than I thought. I try to find an older iPad to test it myself.

Thank you, Marj =)

I was just writing a synopsis while you posted your comment. Please send the ticket, but please also tell us the details I asked on iper mail:

- Browser and version used (Chrome, Firefox, Safari)
- Device used (laptop, PC, Mac computer, phone, tablet...)
- Operating system and version used (Windows, OS, other...)
- All that you have tried already (clearing cache, hitting Ctrl+F5)

Additional information given by Marj. Only happens on middle size album view (view=0):

www.ipernity.com/doc/serola?view=0

Marj uses Internet explorer on Windows 7, and has tried Ctrl+F5 to hard reload the page.

Tony James has the issue on iPad 3 and Safari. Tony James also says he did clear the cache.

As Stefan, I also tested this on Chrome developer tool and iPad emulator, but found no problem.

So, it starts to sound like some style definition not right for some old Safari/iPads.

Aha! I managed to replicate the problem on Internet Explorer 11.1792.17134.0.

Screenshot 2020-10-28 12.07.02

I had that (old?) version on my laptop. On Windows I do recommend updating to Edge browser, if Chrome, Opera or Firefox are out of the question.

What would be the solution on old iPads is still open. On them the latest version seems to be iOS and Safari 12, where the same problem also appears. Can one for example dowload and use some other browser on iOS 12? (probably not)

P.S. In any case I do recommend using more up-to-date devices and browsers, for your own sake. So, please try Firefox for example.

I find it irritating when a developer just uses and implements changes with a new system, and anyone with an older system are just given the "well buy a newer system" as though price is no object for everyone using the system. Inevitably, that hits people who can least afford buying a new machine or software, particularly if all the rest of their system and software works OK. It is not a way to encourage new members, nor is it a good way to keep loyal members.

It seems to me that formatting a page from data could be left in a common use coding, rather than "my new gizmo looks great", but unfortunately everyone has to buy new equipment or software to continue in the user group. This is going back to the old philosophy that the developer requirements and ideas are paramount rather than looking after the user requirements. As a software developer myself, I thought that we had finally broken that concept by accommodating the user requirements even if it causes a programmer a bit more work, but obviously for some this is still not the case.

Incidentally, the iPad3 can only upgrade to iOS9.3, and still works for all my other software. Maybe I was misguided to pay for the 5-year Ipernity subscription in support of Ipernity if this is the case, so perhaps I should reconsider using a different hosting system and ask for a repayment of my advance subscriptions? This is not because of the cost to me, but the principle of programming less well-off users out of the system unless they keep up with the administration changes by having to incur additional expenditure for their systems.

Please don't give up. What you find here is a team that tries it's best to get things solved. Our few technically capable peeps have already tried to find alternative solutions to fix this issue for old browsers.

But I hope you understand that this really is a question of a very few users having very old browsers.

Anyway, as said, we are still working on it. When the latest updates were implemented, we tried to test it very thoroughly, but obviously something was still missed.

Dear Tony, ipernity has no software developpers at all. As a small club with a development budget of only 15,000 EUR per year, we unfortunately cannot afford this. We do everything here purely on a voluntary and self-taught basis as best we can. We are simple members, just like you.

We come from completely different professions and do our best as autodidacts. We test all software updates on a separate AWS test server with different devices in different browsers before they are released. But of course we don't have as many devices as real software developers. And unfortunately, we can't buy old, outdated devices and software either.

But we do have an idea and a question: If you used to be a software developer and still use old devices: Would you be willing to support us as a tester?

Hi Sami, here is another bit of information. I have Chrome on the iPad as well, which I use for Chromecasting to tv. I have logged into Ipernity on it, and as with Safari, all pages work and display as normal, except the the page in question which again is the same as in Safari, with pictures all down the side instead of a 3 x matrix. Notably in both cases, I see that the album comments are now along the top of the page under the menu items, so a new layout must have been implemented recently. I suspect it is this change which has caused the problem.

Thank you, Tony. And could you please tell what version of Chrome it is?

But I know it is really not a good solution. For example I have became a stubborn Chrome user because I also use all other Google products. And I know it is the same with Apple products. Password cloud services alone is one. And all extensions etc.

Hi Sami. The version of Chrome is 46.0.2490.85. This must be the latest version for this iPad, as there isn't any update listed. Yes, I generally use Chrome on my lap-top, which is a 2year old Windows 10 machine, but as Safari is integral to the iPad I use that. It was only later when I wanted to use Chromecast, that I added Chrome to this tablet as well.

Sorry, I missed your previous enquiry as to being a tester for you. Yes, it should be possible if you need it. I have previously reviewed a web-site for an Entomological Study Group, and recently have taken over the development of a new web-site for my Heritage Society (goonhillyheritagesociety.org). With this one, the guy who had taken it on, started development using the IM Creator software, but could not format the pages very well because of the module limitations, so I ended up taking it on and sorting all the problems out. Over the years, as a Communications Systems Design Engineer, involved with software and hardware design, I have taken the philosophy that a programmer gets the software to work in spite of it, rather than because of it, and often you have to be creative and program around problems to get what you want.

Bearing in mind everything else still works normally, I would suspect that there is something wrong with the page coding now. I can't see that the change is particularly different from the original version.

When I previously said "for your sake", I meant that there is always a risk when one uses out-of-date browsers and operating systems. But as we very well know, ipernity is also out-of-date.

However, when it comes to Chrome 46.0.2490.85, I think there is maybe a way to get at least that updated (or install more up-to-date version):

youtu.be/4sYmYpg9oTA

The sound quality on that video is very low, but the point is that it shows that is maybe a way to get a later version of Chrome (76... something?). And if that method explained on the video really works, then one may even find Firefox, Opera or something else. I used to be a Opera fan boy myself few years ago. And that indeed at least used to provide great browsers also for old systems.

And I try to convince ima team that we also still should try to fix this for old iOS 9.3 Safari.

EDIT: What comes to testing, we will keep you in mind, whenever we need someone to test updates especially on iPad and iOS 9.3. And I appreciate that someone uses gear as long as possible. I prefer to use old hardware myself, boosted with free Ubuntu Linux ;-)

I am glad to convince you to switch the browser =D

Some browser statistics: gs.statcounter.com/browser-market-share

Chrome and Safari are leading. It does not mean they are the best browsers out there. But most used. So, it often means also best support.

I used to be Opera fan few years ago. But then they changed the engine, and it is nowadays pretty much the same as Chrome.

And yes, operating system (OS) should be updated as often as possible, and if possible. I should upgrade Ubuntu Linux OS on my laptop soon...

People using browsers older than the following list, will no longer see the problem with medium size images in a single column on the left. Chrome 57, Firefox 52, IE 16, Safari 10, Opera 44.
