Crossing the Brahmaputra

In Assam, North East India, in the middle of the giant Brahmaputra River, lies Majuli Island, the largest riverine island in the world, formed of the silt carried by this mighty river. It is an ancient island, sacred to Hindus, and is home to 500,000 people. It fights a constant battle with erosion and shifting shorelines. Ferries like this make the crossing to the island, the cars boarding the ferries via 2 planks from the bank, to the deck of the boat. It is terrifying as there is mostly a huge difference in heights between the bank and the boats, so the planks are at weird angles!
