Arunachal, Assam and Bengal

The North Eastern States of India are not very touristed. Arunachal Pradesh requires special permits as it borders China, at high altitude in the Himalaya. It used to be part of Tibet, and the Chinese invaded on this border in 1962 to try to retake it. The people are of multitudes of ethnic tribes...from Tibetan, to people like the Apatani.
Assam is also a sensitive area as there have been many separatist attacks and killings, the most recent while we were there...a massacre of 60 people was discovered and the area, like Arunachal is heavily militarised. Assam also houses the UNESCO listed Kaziranga National Park...only home of the endangered one horned Asian Rhinoceros, and will elephants.
And West Bengal is Kolkata..or Calcutta in all its dazzling colour, noise, and close packed frenzy of 20 million people. We went from there to the Sunderbans in the Bay of Bengal to look at the hundreds of islands in the mouth of the Ganges and Brahmaputra...with swimming tigers and elusive wildlife.
