Apatani woman

Apatani woman
In remote North-East India, in the state of Arunachal Pradesh, high in the Himalaya, are many tribes of people still living traditional lives. It is a very untouristed place, up near the border of China and Burma. The Apatani women over about 40 all have the traditional nose plugs and facial tattoos. The younger women are abandoning this. The women live hard lives, working in the fields in the simple villages where they live, as well as all the other work of women within the home. They are very poor, and usually are not Hindu.
I took this while travelling in this remote area, in the village of Ziro. I felt very sorry for these women

Ze kunnen zo toch niet goed ademhalen? Verschrikkelijk. Doen de mannen dat ook of zijn alleen vrouwen het slachtoffer?

This face shows a sense of hopelessness, almost as if the woman does not want to be marked as past child-bearing age. If course i could be wrong. It's interesting that the younger women are not so keen. This woman may be one of the last of the tribe.

A beautiful character portrait Diana.................but she does look a bit sad.

There's an interesting article (from 2018) here: www.thevintagenews.com/2018/06/05/apatani-tribe

It seems that The women in the tribe, exceptionally beautiful, were captured by neighboring tribesmen in the past. To prevent this from happening, the village elders proposed that each woman inserts nose plugs and also have facial tattoos to make them less attractive to the raiders.

This practice began as a precautionary measure but grew to become a vital part of Apatani culture and tradition.

The practice of inserting nose plugs was apparently banned in 1970.

Thank you, Keith. It seems that most of the ancient customs which deform, damage the health of, or limit womens’ freedom, were initially imposed to prevent them being abducted or attacked. This occurred across a vast range of geographical locations on the globe. It doesn’t say much for the blokes who could not control themselves! Yes...the younger women do not have them.
Thanks for the link to the article, too!

A fantastic portrait, Diana. With the light sparkling on her hair and scarf and a lifetime of toil inscribed on her face ... Really beautiful.
With all due respect for other cultures, this strikes me as one of the godawful customs invented by men to make women's lives harder, like the binding of girl's feet in China. Getting to the point of making it hard for them to breathe properly is, if possible, even more extreme.

A very well done portrait.
Some pearcings look similar. But they weren't forced on anyone. Some people pay to be mutilated.
It's good that younger women refuse the nasal plugs.

This is impressive. I can't help but feel sorry for her. Of course, these are their traditions, but it seems kind of cruel. It makes me think to Thailand's giraffe women who wear elaborate brass coils to lengthen their necks.

the NE India's tribals are undergoing radical changes, and their cultures are disappearing in rocket speed. Thank you for sharing, and for the explanation. I'd say we might feel a desperation, but perhaps not for them but that we're not able to do much to stop the development to stop, despite it goes very unmerciful way
