Rufous Songlark
The Rufous Songlark is apparently found across most of mainland Australia, though I can't say I'd positively identified one previously. Maybe if I listened for its song which, my guidebook assures me, is "a rich melodious "twitchy tweedle" ..." :-). Second image in note. Here's a musical link and a different one with the bird itself singing.

Pink lakeside
At the drying edge of one of the Pink Lakes. The water is extremely saline (up to 800 times that of sea water) and home only to an algae which coats itself in pink extrusions to protect itself from the sunlight. The intensity of the pink seems to vary depending on the light and, I gather, is most intense in mid-late summer (about February).

Not really
Before wire took over, many rural fences in Australia were made from split timber in a "post and rail" construction. On my travels I saw this new fence build in the old style - but it's made from moulded panels to give the "old" look. HFF and have a great weekend, everyone.

Mallee gum
I've read that there are about 40 different species of eucalypts in the "mallee gum" category, so I won't try to identify this one further. :-) They grow in the drier areas of Australia and are characterised by having spreading branches without a trunk.
Outback magpie
An Australian magpie sitting on a fence (on the Hay plain, in western NSW). And some saltbush.
Still on the road, home and back online properly early next week. HFF and have a great weekend, everyone.

Jess
A well-loved pet with which we stayed a few nights in the course of our travels. Still far from home and likely to be an intermittent visitor for a while yet.
Great to return online tonight and to find that the IMA now has full running of the site. Club membership renewed. :-)
Away...
The "Emperor" in the Xian stage show about the Tang Dynasty, closing the show and saying "farewell" (see also my previous image). I'm also about to depart for the next few weeks. I may have some occasional internet, but expect I'll be largely off line. Best wishes, everyone.
