Cleaning up

Cleaning up
Today was the annual "Clean up Australia Day", the 25th. It was started by a round-the-world yachtsman, who was aghast at the amount of rubbish in the oceans - and decided that the best place to start cleaning up rubbish was right at home! The inset shows what our local Landcare group collected from just a few km of local roads, even a kitchen sink! Can't say I like the music, but it's the advert for Landcare: www.youtube.com/watch?v=mZqEB8T6mN4

Gudrun, Gerda, , and 8 other people have particularly liked this photo

It is a great scheme, amazing that it was started by Ian Kiernan 25 years ago and still going strong.

Maybe not destined to be an all-time classic track but the combination here works great for 'Soundtrack to Life' :-) A very worthy idea. Thanks for posting, George.

A wonderful idea! In Luxembourg this is done on a daily basis by the "Service Hygiènique" and that's why you will never see old rotting cars or other machines etc. laying around here as I see it so often on photos from people who live in the U.S.A.

Excellent initiative! Sadly it's only a drop in the ocean- I get the impression it's getting worse, people just drop their rubbish where they are. But then it isn't easy these days to buy anything without lots of superfluous packaging...

Many thanks, everyone for your kind comments. You may be interested in the official national results on the Clean up Australia Day. The organisers have said This year you joined an estimated 526,268 volunteers at 6,165 clean up sites across the country. Thanks to your efforts, an estimated 13,563 tonnes of rubbish was removed from our local streets, parks, beaches, waterways and bushland.
