Arriving at Mawson Station
From an old slide. First sight of 'home' for the coming year. The view as we entered Horseshoe Harbour, looking across West Arm to Mawson station across the far side and Mt Henderson (about 25km inland) showing above the ice cap. The sign on the headland says Welcome to Mawson, Australia's winter playground."
In the PiP part of the unloading. Everything was taken ashore in the DUKWS (WW2 vintage amphibious vehicles): people, boxes, and hundreds of fuel drums. It was very busy, with the intention of making a quick turnaround of unloading, backloading some items to Australia, then changing the old and new wintering parties.
Mawson station has been completely rebuilt since my time. If you visit this link you will see the current station and a timelapse movie for the previous two days. I am reposting this on our Midsummer's Day.
