superb monument to john thackeray of 1851 by e.h.baily, with faith and charity indicating a list of his charitable works. beneath the figures are reliefs of his almshouses in lewisham just down the road and of shaw's great hall at christ's hospital. an old blue himself and thus probably from an impoverished background, thackeray left a long list of bequests to the bluecoat school and its affiliated organizations.
