Workaround to fix Chrome's Google Map pop-up windo…

25 Feb 2020 5 3 237
Workaround to fix Chrome's Google Map pop-up window bug This ain't look good on Chrome browser . Even when the pop-up window opens fully, the buttons to zoom in/out, and buttons to open other features, are missing somewhat every time. The workaround is to press [Ctrl] key on keyboard, hold it down, and then press either [+] or [-] key. That key shortcut is for zooming the page size bigger or smaller , but it then also refresh the map window and brings buttons onto display, and therefore it fixes the situation until one reloads the page or switches to another page. And If you wish to bring the default page size back again, then press [Ctrl] key, hold it down, and press [0] (as for number zero). The reason why this happens on Chrome browser is still a mystery. Literary hours are spent to figure out why this happens, especially when opening Google Map onto pop-up window on Chrome browser, and maybe it happens only here at ipernity. So, if you have any idea how to fix this, please let me know. Or do as Rob Stamp keep on saying to me. Switch to Firefox, or to any other browser than Chrome =P

Blackmail

16 Apr 2020 6 15 206
According to Guardian (Thu 17 Jan 2019) , this is a typical “webcam blackmail” or “sextortion scam”. From the depths of internet (darknet) those criminals have mined some old, not so good passwords, used maybe even years ago. Nothing happened, nothing was hacked, and no spy-/malware found on my devices. Not that I was worried because any of those accusations made on the message. The real concern was the security of all work related stuff and private correspondence between me and other people. In this case the password is probably the same that was compromised somewhat ten years ago, when my Twitter account got hacked. And if you ever get such email, I recommend ignoring it. The worst thing one could do is to reply. What you can and should do instead: 1) If you indeed still use such endangered old password anywhere, then change it immediately! 2) You can also check if some of your old passwords are listed at Have I Been Pwned database . But even if you get "green light", change that password anyway. 3) To assure yourself that your computer is not hacked, update your operating system. Install some Internet Security software , if you do not have one yet. Update that software if you have. Run full inspection on your computer. Some of the software providers give free "online check", like F-Secure . 4) Although the accusation to become spied via webcam is ridiculous, such spyware still exists. The solution is simple. Put a sticker over your web cam when you are not using it. Microphone is another risk on laptops and mobile devices. There are for example claims that companies like Google secretly spies users via microphone, to provide more targeted services (advertisements). I find that very unlikely, and only as rumor spread by competitors and those who sees conspiracy theories everywhere. But again, technically anything is possible. By keeping your operating system and software up-to-date, you should be on safe side. At least do not say aloud: "My ipernity account password is x.", onto your device microphone ;-) 5) Do not visit any web sites that could endanger your device and privacy! Do not open any links on email, that you are not sure about! Use only trusted sources. 6) Consider reporting blackmail as a crime. There is maybe an online service provided by local/national police to do that. You may wish to mark it as less urgent issue. Such criminals at least can hide their tracks, usually, So, most likely they never get caught. But blackmail is a blackmail, no matter what. At least it is "intimidation" (cowing, illegal threat).

Use protection! =D

I updated my recent article on how to vacuum clean your camera (or other gear). I also added there this old trick, which I have used ever since I managed to ruin one camera because of the fine dust. Obviously this may not keep the camera entirely dust free, since I just had to do that vacuum clean trick for my Canon G5x. But without such plastic bag protection, the situation could be much worse. Besides, one can even use such small plastic bag as a "mini umbrella" above the camera, if it is raining. The point is that there are so much small fabric dust inside overcoat pockets, that it may eventually even cause a short-circuit on the camera electronics. That is what once happened to me. And if that happens, then a quick overall vacuum cleaning may not be enough.

DIY wrist strap

01 Jun 2020 9 7 227
Several years ago smart phone manufacturers stopped adding an attachment for a wrist strap. Ever since I have had to make my own innovations to get the wrist strap attached to the phone. Wrist strap is a number one gadget I need to have on all of my compact cameras, to make sure I do not drop them in action. ➽ The most common cell phone accidents to watch out for

More precise reports please. So, which one is the case? 1) Star missing from the ACTIONS menu. 2) Star is displayed but does not work. 3) Problem solved. The star feature has started to work again. 4) Something else, what? Questions for those who have this issue: A) What browser do you use? B) Do you use some dark theme extension (Firefox addons)? What? (e.g. Dark Reader, Stylish)

Poll results 2020-09-03 08.50.17

This screen capture already gives a good overall view. However, on both there were one duplicate visit. Therefore at this point of time the result is: 10 likes tea 19 likes coffee As Xata commented previously , one could very well choose both. It then means the "both options are okay". And if this would be a choice between "two evil", one could either decide not to vote, or accept both as "better than nothing". I have now revised the poll description accordingly . There were zero anonymous visits on both. If there would have been, those should have become reduced from the results as well. Thank you for helping me to test this! =)

Testing Screencastify for making "ipernity howto"…

The subject is "How to customize your homepage". First the basics: 1) Go to " Content of your home page " settings. 2) Use green plus to add block(s). 3) Grab on the block header to change it's place. Over the block header, press the mouse cursor down, keep it pressed, and then start moving the block. Then release the mouse cursor to leave the block where you want it. 4) Do not forget to SAVE! Do notice the default "Latest photos and videos posted" block is fixed. It's place can be changed, but it can't be removed. It also turns from large images to small ones when it is not the only block on the homepage. ---- Details of the video This video was created with Screencastify . It is probably available as a Chrome browser extension only. It is free to use up to 5 minute videos. On Screencastify there are tools to share and download videos in multiple ways. I converted the video onto mp4 format, downloaded it, and then uploaded it here at ipernity. This short video takes 9 megabytes space at the server. If you are planning to do similar videos, then be prepared for uploads that can take a lot of time, and keep the videos short to save your personal space at ipernity. And if you do "ipernity howto" instructions by yourself, then please use the "ipernity howto" keyword.

How to search? What special symbols can be used? How to download albums? You can find plenty of useful blog articles and photo articles tagged with ipernity-howto keyword. There are also number of older ima team blog articles not (yet) tagged with ipernity-howto keyword. Most of them are listed on FAQ article How to use ipernity . If those sources fail to cover the topic you are looking for, you can also ask help from other users at Ipernity User Help Central group . You can also write and publish your own howto posts and use "ipernity-howto" keyword. If you are not sure whether your post is good enough to share like this, then please ask here on comments. Feedback on my ipernity-howto photos and Ipernity-howto blog articles is also welcome under each of them. If and when you use "ipernity-howto" keyword, make sure you write it inside quotation marks, exactly like this: "ipernity-howto"

Topic search

Lesson learned on information seeking. If one wish to discover a good selection of images on certain topic, then there are number of things to consider. Search for recent images on topic "cat" will give a lot of "noise": [EN] www.ipernity.com/search/photo?opt=1&q=cat&w=0&t=0&lic=&s=2 Somewhat the same on any language chosen: [NL&DE] www.ipernity.com/search/photo?opt=1&q=kat&w=0&t=0&lic=&s=2 [FR] www.ipernity.com/search/photo?opt=1&q=chat&w=0&t=0&lic=&s=2 However, there is an option to limit the search on keywords (if used): [EN] www.ipernity.com/search/photo?opt=1&q=cat&w=0&t=0&lic=&s=2&m=1 [NL&DE] www.ipernity.com/search/photo?opt=1&q=kat&w=0&t=0&lic=&s=2&m=1 [FR] www.ipernity.com/search/photo?opt=1&q=chat&w=0&t=0&lic=&s=2&m=1 That is somewhat the same as to access certain keywords directly: [EN] www.ipernity.com/explore/keyword/10560?s=2 [NL&DE] www.ipernity.com/explore/keyword/10560?s=2 [FR] www.ipernity.com/explore/keyword/10011?s=2 Search on keywords is however maybe better, because it should then cover plurals and compound words. But what one should not overlook is the power of groups. People gathering together to collect images on certain topics can be the best way to find images on that topic. And it then is free from limitations of language searches: ▶️ Groups where "cat" appears on the title or description So, a group can be seen as an alternative for keywords. People then describe the content according to group topic, free from language barriers!

"cat" NOT "dog"

13 Oct 2020 14 9 163
As an " information scientist " I should have tried and figured this out ages ago! One seem to be able to use somewhat all Boolean operators on searches at ipernity! So, instead of worrying that I can not search for cats and get also a lot of noise , I should really tried it, and search for: "cat" So, by writing quotation marks around the "search string", I make sure not to get also photos of caterpillars and advocates . Moreover, I can indeed use those capital letter operators: "cat" NOT "dog" And, I can also have an OR operator: "cat" OR "dog" The only limitation sometimes is that words on caption, keywords and comments may mess up the search results: "cat" AND "dog" So, anyone mentioning either of the cases on comments or elsewhere will cause cases where are maybe only cat on the image and dog becomes mentioned somewhere else. However, this is way better than to have all words where the search string appears in the middle of longer words. The Boolean operators then comes replaced with some corresponding symbols on the search field: + = AND | = OR - = NOT And some character comes replaced even more cryptic ones on the URL field. But the outcome is what matters if and when it helps to find out something more spesific. Please find more on my Secrets of ipernity search blog article.
