Flowers ...

Flowers ...
... straight out of camera.

Thanks to Professor John Hedgecoe for all the books and inspiration (RIP)! I do recommend reading especially The Photographer’s Handbook and learn what could be done with "good old analogue methods". At that time photography was much more focused on things that one can do before pressing the shutter (optical filters, props, manual lenses, lights etc.).

An amateur photographer like me may had had money to spend on camera, lenses, props, and special effect filters, but had no money, skills or space for a proper lab, especially not for a color lab. So, one had to rely on professional photo labs. A popular hobby was to shoot especially on reversal film (diafilm), and then spend some "quality time" with family and friends to watch the slides on a projector screen (yawn!).

I recently sold all my old film cameras. So, here you see my old Four Thirds Olympus E450, which is no longer worth of anything. And that is because Four Thirds system turned out only as a short sidestep before Micro Four Thirds. The positive side of it is that I decided to give up on (D)SLR cameras completely, and end up using more practical pocket cameras. Although, long time ago I successfully used also pocket film cameras like Olympus XA4 and Canon IXUS (APS).

John Hedgecoe obituary: www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2010/jun/29/john-hedgecoe-obituary

Some technical yada: The arrangement was set on windowsill, using old baking tray as a background. Because of overall dark tones, I had to underexpose image with -5/3 EV. I also had to use digital zoom to get the background fit into frame. The phone camera I use, comes with over 20 MP sensor, which is why digital zooming up to 2 times still gives rather good resolution.

Creative! Thanks for the Hedgecoe obituary as well. I remember leafing through his books as a kid, but never really knew anything about himself. It says there that they are planning to put all his work online. I wonder if that ever happened?

Excellent shot and interesting notes. As someone who stopped taking photos in about 1986, but used to enjoy the manual manipulation of things pre-click, I missed all that when I resumed in 2011 just with pocket digitals and camera phones / smart phones and so on.

I have wondered what kind of gear (camera) you are using, Andy =)

For me photography somewhat only started in 1986 when I first bought my own Pentax ME SLR, and then later Olympus OM4 and OM1. And then pocket Olympus XA for trips. I even tried to get studying photography in art school, but never became accepted there. So, photography remained only as my hobby.

Between 2000 and 2010 I had my "sabbatical" from photography because I no longer could not find any use for the photos. I even played with a idea of "air photography", which would be similar as playing "air guitar". Instead of carrying around real camera, one would use imaginary camera instead, take imaginary photos, and maybe even go through the whole developing process in one's head.

Thanks to social media I rediscovered photography, digital cameras, and social media photography groups.

The only problem with that are the reflections ;-) So, make sure the light comes from sides and not on you and your camera, to avoid your own reflection. Unless you want to include some reflections =D

Well this is straight out of camera, Sami, and it's making me smile. I used to love my old Olympus SLR cameras, but didn't click the shutter button often enough as I was thinking of the processing expenses. ;-)

A creative idea well captured. The camera on my Sony phone isn't quite up to this. A compact that shoots raw format is my idea of the ideal camera. I've had my Sony RX100 Mk II for four years, taken 30,000 pictures, and it hasn't developed hot pixels as other compacts I've owned have. And it doesn't even notice it's winter, which I attribute to its engineering.

Compacts seem to be getting pricey, though. RX 100 Mk VI costs US$1,200 (Cdn$1,600 for me. I'm using the Mk II till it can't shoot no more.

Sami Serola (inactiv… club has replied to John FitzGerald club
That indeed is an ideal camera also in my standards! Even when shooting JPEG only. As you may have noticed, I bought Canon G5 X to get a tool for better pictures. Unfortunately it has some cons like annoyingly stupid focusing meter and algorithm. It simply can not switch from macro to normal mode based on the scene, and manual focusing is hopelessly awkward. So, I find myself using phone camera more often...
