The sculpture of the kneeling Jew, who has to clean the pavement with a sponge, is a detail of the in 1988 installed memorial against war and fascism by the Austrian sculptor Alfred Hrdlicka on Albertinaplatz in the City of Vienna, opposite the Albertina. It reminds me impressively, in a way that can hardly be surpassed, of the repulsive ideology and practice of Nazism. What guilt had he brought upon himself ? Was he perhaps simply unvaccinated ?
