Fire Monument 1760 ~ Blandford Forum

Fire Monument 1760 ~ Blandford Forum
The Fire Monument ~ John Bastard and his brother William, were architects and builders. They were responsible for much of the rebuilding of Blandford Forum following a fire in 1731. The rebuilding of the town was officially completed in 1760 – a feat commemorated by this memorial in the form of a portico to the church. It was built above a piped spring so that, should a fire break out again, it would supply a head of water for the attachment of fire hoses. The monument was converted into a drinking fountain in 1899.

Excellent architectural photography Rosa................this monument is really lovely and what a great idea to convert it to a drinking fountain. Is it still working?

The detail in this scene is outstanding............especially viewed large........and I like the mix of stone and brickwork, which is very attractive.

You have a really good eye for this sort of subject matter..!!

Thank you very much for your kind comments Keith. I think the drinking fountain is still working but I didn't try it. I will check next time I'm there. Blandford is very Georgian now, but I would love to know how it looked before the big fire. I will have to take a look in the museum next time I visit.

Hi Rosa
A very nice picture, which I like very much!
Wonderful and interesting idea to have a water supply, but did Mr Bastard do his sums right in figuring out how much water it could deliver?
Incidentally, I came across 'Bastaard' beer in Holland, and a French work colleague of many years ago was M. L'Bastard, so quite a common name. I hear it used all the time ......

Best Wishes, HWW, a nice week, and stay cool!!

Hi Peter,
Thank you for your kind comments. It it had been my name, I would
definitely have changed it ;-)) Although said with a French accent
it doesn't sound so bad! Well, Mr Bastard certainly made a lot of money.
I will get a picture of his house next time I am in the town.
Best wishes,
Rosa.

Names like Blandford Forum remind me of PG Wodehouse's Jeeves & Wooster novels. I'm sure there must be a mention somewhere in his novels. ;-)

I wonder if it's safe to drink the water these days?

Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Amelia club
Yes the name does have that ring to it Amelia :-)
I don't know about the water, but I will check it out
on my next visit....If you don't hear from me for a
while, you'll know the answer ;-))

Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Nouchetdu38 club
Thank you very much Nouchet. After the fire it was built in the Georgian style.
I want to see what it is thought to have looked like before that, so a visit to
the museum on my next visit I think :-)
