The Dorset Shepherd.

The Dorset Shepherd.
A sculpture in Dorchester inspired by a William Barnes Poem. The sculptor is John Doubleday and the poem is "The Shepherd O' the Farm." Here are the first two of ten verses....I don't think it will translate well as it is in the old Dorset dialect!!

Oh! I be shepherd o’ the farm,
Wi’ tinklèn bells an’ sheep-dog’s bark,
An’ wi’ my crook a-thirt my eärm,
Here I do rove below the lark.

An’ I do bide all day among
The bleäten sheep, an’ pitch their vwold;
An’ when the evenèn sheädes be long,
Do zee em all a-penn’d an’ twold.

Such a charming sculpture..............I'm guessing it's made of bronze. I love the patina and the brickwork plinth works well. Captured in great detail Rosa.

I like the poem too............the dialect is fairly easy to work out - you get the gist of it anyway!

Yes it is bronze Keith. The dogs head was very shiny where people pat it or smooth it as they pass....I did that too ;-) Glad you understood the poem. I think ten verses might have been pushing it a bit though!!

Thank you Ulrich. I lady who lives near me writes poetry in the Somerset dialect. I think she should get it published. It's very funny :)

Excellent photograph of this gentlemen, I am fascinated by the ever changing grammer and vocabulary especially when you read snippets of news written in say the 1920s.

Thank you Maurice. Yes our language has changed so much over the years. I love some of the old expressions and phrases that are no longer used and the more polite greetings that are rare these days.

La estatua está tan bien que pensé nada más verla que se trataría de un pastor con su perro, por cierto muy conseguido (al servicio de su amo) calzado con botas y polainas. La foto está muy bien, con buenos detalles como la textura.

Thank you very much José. The dogs are one thing that has not changed and are still very important to most shepherds. Have a good weekend.

You don't see many farmers in leather gaiters nowadays !!! I remember Mr. Dalby sowing broadcast in his gaiters. Leicester got a statue of Alice Hawkins last year.
Have you complained to the council about not repairing the plinth

Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Peter Castell club
Many things have changed in farming since the days of this shepherd but the dogs are still very important to them. To be honest I didn't even notice the plinth until this picture. I was busy reading the poem at the back of the statue.

I like the statue, the dog and the poem. It had a lovely rhythm. I remember being asked to recite Tam O' Shanter by an American couple once. A bit 9of a challenge.

Thank you Jean. I hope the couple appreciated your rendition! Not sure I could recite any of William Barnes poetry, but my father could have done :)
