Stan Laurel was born in Ulverston (as Arthur Stanley Jefferson) in 1890. The statue was unveiled in 2009.

The monument is 100 feet tall, modelled on the Eddystone Lighthouse.
Sir John Barrow was born in Ulverston and was a founder member of the Royal Geographical Society, amongst various claims to fame.
