It may appear like that, Pam, but inside it has three wonderful gallery spaces: one for Henry Moore, one for Barbara Hepworth (two of the 20th century's greatest artists, both from the Wakefield area) and one space for travelling exhibitions by modern working artists. It may look soulless from the outside but (like all of us, I guess) it has a heart and soul inside its unprepossessing exterior. ;-) (And I actually like its brutalist ugliness!)

I agree with all you say about it’s light-filled interior spaces, but on a sunny day the light concrete geometrical exterior seems almost ethereal, set near water and weir .Mind you, your photograph does make it look very threatening!

You're right to upbraid me, Steve, it is far nicer than it appears here. I love the contrast between it and the older wharf side buildings which border the gallery or are over the river by the new footbridge. I spent a happy few hours both in the Hepworth and looking at the river, the weir, the wharf buildings and the streets which were so much part of my childhood, lo these many years ago.

I'd love to visit the real heart of this gallery!!!!
As to the flags...flags are known to have increasingly become an integral part, although perhaps unnecessary for museums and art galleries.but , here, basically, here they don't disturb at all the most valuable effect of the whole.

Thank you, Beatrice. I must say that I love this building, both inside and out. This was my first visit, although each time I have visited family in the area I promised myself I would see it. It was worth the wait.

Regarding the flags: I suspect they are part of a sponsorship deal with the gallery. I think Smart is a car and this probably is important for the finances of the Hepworth. It is free to enter and yet the cost of maintaining the building and exhibits must be enormous. I'll put up with the flags if they mean the Hepworth stays open.
