Grave Stele with a Woman Holding a Mirror in the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, October 2009

Grave Stele with a Woman Holding a Mirror in the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, October 2009
Grave Stele with a Woman Looking at Herself in a Mirror

Greek, Athenian, Classical period, around 400 BC
Marble from Mt. Pentelikon near Athens

# 04.16

The mirror would have been of polished brass or silver rather than glass. The woman wears disc earrings, and she stands in a doorway or temple-like frame composed of Doric pilasters (antae), a triangular pediment, and roof ornaments (acroteria). The acroteria would have been decorated with with painted palmettes.
