Marble Disc with a Scene of Dionysiac Ritual in the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, October 2009

Marble Disc with a Scene of Dionysiac Ritual in the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, October 2009
Marble Disc with a Scene of Dionysiac Ritual
Hellenistic, second or first century BC
From Greece
Marble, from Mt. Pentelikon near Athens

# 37.1152

Three delirious women collapse in the foreground. The procession behind- a woman with torches and an old man with a tray- indicates that this is a ritual event. Since the old man resembles Silenos, a follower of Dionysos, it is probable that this scene is connected with his cult.
