Red Telephone Box

Red Telephone Box
A spotted this red telephone box in Topsham, Devon.........an increasingly rare sight nowadays.

Viewed large you can see that the box has been seriously neglected, which for me, made it very photogenic..!!

Berny, aNNa schramm, *Уαɾα, Roger (Grisly) and 17 other people have particularly liked this photo

Schitterende opname, Keith. Jij moet nog een keer terug gaan naar TOpsham Devon, want ik wil de telefoon zien die daar binnen hangt en ik wil weten , waar die stalen beugel voor diend die op het dak is gemonteerd.

The phone is just a normal dialling one with a box for putting coins in.....nothing special. I'm not sure what the bracket on the roof is for, but probably for lifting it when needed.l

Glad you like the photo Frans........many thanks!

Awesome! I love the neglect it has created so much more character and amazing that it still has a phone in it !! we have one in the village that is in better condition but has no phone in it, the local councillor has asked for ideas of what to do with it, unless they can find a use it will be removed, most people have suggested installing a defibrillator.

Anyhow I really like this shot a lot

I thought this one might be to your taste James........and I'm glad I was right. Thanks for your visit and interesting comments!

I've seen a couple not to far from me that have been converted into community libraries, where people can donate books, or swap them.

I hope you've had a cooler day..!!

It looks like a time capsule…so iconic the old red boxes. Long gone here except as odd crumbling remnants in the remotest of country hamlets here, have a top weekend Keith.

Keith Burton club has replied to Diana Australis club
They are still quite impressive looking I think..........but a lot of the younger generations seem horrified when you explain what you used to have to go through to make or receive a phone call, if you didn't have a phone at home :-)))

Thanks for stopping by and leaving comments Diana.....thank you so much and have a top weekend yourself.

I love the photogenic signs of decay especoally on the red paint! Amazing that the golden crowns seem to be completely unaffected and that the phone still seems to be working!

That's precisely why I liked this one so much Gudrun........and I'm glad you agree that it's very photogenic.

The phone was definitely working......I lifted it up and got a dial tone. Funnily enough, the golden crowns looked as if they'd been recently painted :-)))

Thanks for dropping in and commenting..!!

If this metal bracket was designed to lift the telephone box, that makes it the forerunner of the mobile phone!
;o)))

You could be right Typo.

My first mobile phone was issued to me by the Royal Navy..........basically, was a normal phone linked to a huge battery and an aerial. It needed a suitcase-sized box to carry it and it was very heavy! It only worked when connected by wire to a local network!

Like you I do find these ( postboxes ). catch the eye. I do know a few that are still phones as we live in quite a rural area but elsewhere as James says they have had a change of use. I the Lake District I have seen one that is a mini tourist information centre but more often they are book exchange points and even more often defibrillators. this one needs a kick of paint but perhaps is more interesting with an aged look.

Keith Burton club has replied to Colin Ashcroft club
I think in some rural areas they're a good back-up option, especially for people who may not have a decent signal etc.

I've seen them used as little libraries, defibrillator storage, and occasionally I've seen one in private gardens where the council have sold them off.

Glad you like this one Colin.......many thanks!

Definitely the worse for wear, Keith. The young may be horrified at the thought of having no 'telephone' on hand, but at least we talk to each other face to face, and don't check a rectangular piece of equipment for most of the item and ignore the surroundings.
Keith Burton club has replied to Amelia club
Indeed..!!

I remember when I was abroad with the RN in the 1970s, if I wanted to phone home first I had to find a local telephone exchange who could do overseas calls, then we had to work out the time-zone differences. I then had to book the call and my wife had to walk about 500 yards to the nearest phone box (and of course I needed to know its number). With luck, everything would come together at the right time. What a faff..!!
