The Seeds of the Horse Chestnut Tree

.........or as they are commonly known: Conkers. I went out this afternoon and scrabbled about in a road (between the traffic) near our house to collect them.
You have to get to them before the school kids who generally want them to play the game of Conkers.
Conkers is a traditional children's game in Great Britain and Ireland played using the seeds of horse chestnut trees—the name 'conker' is also applied to the seed and to the tree itself. The game is played by two players, each with a conker threaded onto a piece of string: they take turns striking each other's conker until one breaks. (Info from Wikipedia).
I've added a close crop in the PiP for detail.

Keith Burton club has replied to J.Garcia clubKeith Burton club has replied to Peter Castell clubIt's always that deep brown colour that I find attractive. I'm assuming kids still play conkers, I see them collecting them each autumn, although some schools apparently banned the game due to safety concerns :-)))

Best Wishes. Herb
Keith Burton club has replied to Herb Riddle clubSadly a lot of the Horse Chestnut trees in this part of the country are affected by blight. I don't think it actually kills them off but can cause premature leaf drop and affects the general health of the tree.
The horse chestnut trees have really suffered not only with blight but also with the very dry summer, and are looking very sad now.

Meine Kastanie hat wieder unzählige Kapseln abgeworfen. Leider gibt es niemanden, der sie einsammelt und als Deko verwendet. Im nächsten Jahr muss ich dann hunderte Keimlinge beseitigen.
Keith Burton club has replied to Rachel J BowlerLooking forward to seeing what you come up with..!!
