Common gulls are smaller than herring gulls , and while they share a similar appearance, they have distinct features. Common gulls have greenish legs, a thinner yellow bill that lacks the red spot found on herring gulls, and a darker eye. Herring gulls have pink legs, a larger yellow bill with a red spot, and a pale eye.
