Hornet Mimic Hoverfly

Hornet Mimic Hoverfly
At around 2cm long this is the largest hoverfly in the UK. It is an excellent mimic of the Hornet, which gains it some protection from predators. It is harmless to humans.

Taken in my garden on one of our Buddliea bushes.

Please view large for best effect...............and check out another view in the PiP.

Buddleyas are very attractive for butterflies too (I have been told, we don’t have them here, too hot and dry).
The green leaves make a jewellery case for the hoverfly, like extra wings

They are indeed Isabel............I have buddliea bushes in my garden which have recently started flowering. They are sometimes called the butterfly bush.............although I've hardly seen any butterflies in the garden so far this year.

Glad you like the photo............and thanks for commenting.

You caught both hoverfly and flowers in fabulous detail! I love buddleias and marvel how they often grow (obviously wild) alongside railway lines.

Thanks very much Gudrun..................glad you approve. I have 4 buddliea bushes in my garden which have recently started flowering. They are commonly seen alongside railway lines in England as well.

Thank you Jan..........I'm pleased you like it.

I first came across one of these in my garden about 4 years ago and at first I was convinced it was an actual Hornet............and steered well clear :-)) One of my photographer friends told me what it was though, which was reassuring. I like most insects, but didn't fancy having hornets around the garden. Since then, I've seen them around every year.

I am pleased it is harmless to humans Keith. Interesting how things evolve in nature for protection isn't it! There are so many types of winged insects. Another thing that we are learning all the time on Ipernity. Two superb pictures, and the buddleia looks pretty good as well.

I'm pleased you like these Rosa.........I really like hoverflies, and generally they cooperate well for photos. There was one of these in my garden again this morning (obviously I'm not sure whether it was the same one)!

Thank you as always for your kind and interesting comments.

That’s a good one. Buddliea just flowering this week. Very few butterflies and hoverflies in the garden so far.

Thanks Colin. My buddliea are doing pretty well at the moment..........but the butterfly and hoverfly situation here is not much better.

Thank you Wilhelm............there's nearly always at least of of these around at this time of year!
