Uppark House

Uppark House
Uppark House was built in 1690 iin South Harting, West Sussex, England. It is a Grade I listed building and a National Trust property. As the sky was grey and featureless I decided that black and white was the way to go with this one.

This is the nearest Trust property to where I live. Unfortunately I've never been able to visit the interior of the house, apart from a couple of ground floor rooms, mainly due to covid-19 restrictions, but the gardens are lovely and they do a pricey but very nice bit of coffee and cake in their café.

In 1989 as work on restoring the roof was near completion a huge fire broke out on the top floors. The Fire Service worked to contain the fire while staff, volunteers and members of the public started removing the contents of the house to safety. Nevertheless, can imagine the damage done, not just directly by the fire, but also by the water used to contain it.

You can read the amazing story of the fire and the subsequent restoration of the house using this link: www.nationaltrust.org.uk/uppark-house-and-garden/features/the-fire-at-uppark

It's well worth a read if you have time.

I suppose it could be called creepy, but it doesn't seem that way to me................it would be different in the dark, I think :-)

This one WAS creepy: www.ipernity.com/doc/keithburton/19694667

Ein majestätischer Anblick. S/W passt hier sehr gut. Das Gebäude erscheint dadurch zeitlos. Man könnte meinen, es sei der Zustand vor dem Brand.

GREAT SHOT, perfect use for b/w too. What a marvelous house, the architecture is really fantastic. Thanks for all of the information too, though I don't have the time to read the whole story. I'm really glad they restored this.

Steve and I stayed at this incredible place called Cape Blanco and there was a historic house to visit there that is very popular. We also didn't get to view the inside but here is what it looks like: Hughes House There is also quite the story to this one as well. I enjoy learning about the history of area attractions too. :)
(How nice that I can show you pictures from our trip which aren't on ipernity! :)
