Leda and the Swan

Leda and the Swan
"Leda e o Cisne" is a statue created in 1880 by Germano José de Salles, a Portuguese sculptor. It is now sited at the Town Hall in Funcal, Madeira Island.
In Greek myth, Leda's encounter with the god Zeus (in the guise of a swan) on the same night as an encounter with her husband, gave rise to the births of Helen (of Troy) Clytemnestra (wife and murderer of Agamemnon) and their brothers Castor and Pollux. There are many variants of the story from ancient times. The myth has inspired many visual art works over the centuries and in literature it was alluded to by Sylvia Plath and W.B.Yeats amongst many others. Music and stage (ballet) works on the subject have appeared since the late 20th century.
