When I was a boy, there was free horse manure at every intersection. Now you have to go to the store and pay for cow manure. There's your progress for you.

I recommend the full-screen view. But, like, it's up to you, eh?

I clicked on the thumbnail, and when I saw what was in the bags I almost spat out my martini. De fumier de vache, indeed. Not your one-time horse, indeed!

One of my childhood memories is of dogs sniffing around the manure the milkmen's horses left behind at stop signs. Today's kids can probably only get that experience in video games:. "Grand Theft Horse and Wagon," "Milkcraft,", "Mario Brothers: Milk Run," etc.

The allure of manure..!!

There are a couple of farms near me that still advertise "Pick your own manure". They're talking about horse manure though and it saves the owners having to pick it up themselves.

Likewise, as kids we collected the horse shit for the garden but from fields, not street corners. Bucket loads of it. (Cow manure stayed where it laid though). Some of those bags look ready to split, a fine mess in the car boot if they do.

My childhood experiences with gardening pretty well put me off it for the rest of my life. It bears a very strong resemblance to work.
