Over the last ten years or so much of Toronto has been torn down and rebuilt, Cheryl. Unfortunately the new building isn't much better than the old -- lots of glass towers (which are not even suitable for the climate). The high vis jackets, orange ssigns, etc., do add a much needed touch of colour to this grey city, though.

The workman seems to be contemplating it all, too.

Lots of rectangles, which I don't think I'd have noticed (since they go with the territory) except for the rusty-orange tower rising up and out of the picture.

The price of security is eternal vigilance, Bob. Actually, the work(wo)man reminded me of Romantic paintings of lone figures contemplating mountains.

Never thought of that classic picture, but you're right, she does have the correct body language. Excellent point.

To me the lone figure standing there looks as if they are thinking "Where the hell do I begin."

Tiny people in a sterile concrete and steel landscape. That jacket really leaps out of the image.

Thanks, George. I wouldn't have taken the photo without the image. The impression of sterility comes from the lack of colour, I think. Torontonians hate colour, or at lteast they let people put up thousands of colourless buildings.

For me, the Security Guard really makes this shot. I imagine him wondering whether there is anything missing since he was there last, and what the workman in the blue hat is doing with the fence. Probably also not sure where everyone else has gone.

As I mentioned to George, Keith, I wouldn't have taken the shot if the guard and his/her jacket hadn't been there. I had't thought about the air of desertion, but obviously that's probably why I thought about Romantic painters. They were painting the Sublime, though; don't know that this view qualifies.

This has complicated photography in downtown Toronto, Gisela. Sunlight reaches the street for only three or four hours a day at mid-day. Very little early-morning or early-afternoon light reaches the street. On the other hand, in the middle of the day the reflections from all the glass buildings light up both sides of the street.
