Guildhall, Norwich

Guildhall, Norwich
I decided to repost some of the photos I deleted when the site looked as if it was going under.

The Guildhall was completed in 1413, and housed the city offices from then till 1938.

This is square knapped flintwork with stone trim. It is the costliest form of flintwork, so probably was used to make the building more impressive. The flintwork dates from 1534, when the Guildhall was rebuilt after the roof of the council chamber collapsed..

Thanks very much, Keith. Norwich is an undiscovered gem -- by North American tourists, anyway. I was shocked the last time I was there, two years ago, when I heard another North American accent. Once.

Thanks, Diane. There's a nice cafe inside, too. I haven't been to it in a couple of years but it's keeping up its high ratings on TripAdvisor.

It's certainly a fine building, Jean. It's on the north aide of the market, the Art Deco city hall (1938) is on the west side, and St. Peter Mancroft Church (1455, with a rood screen by Ninian Comper) is on the south. A short but rewarding architectural walk, after which you can go in the Sir Garnet and eat and have a drink and a meal while you look out at the city hall and Guildhall. Then you can go shopping on the east side in George Skipper's remarkable Art Nouveau Royal Arcade (1899). But wait! That's not all!....

Thanks, Volker. I will be posting more photos in bâtiments notables. I've been neglecting the group. I think.
