King & Simcoe, Toronto

King & Simcoe, Toronto
The object on the left is a switch box for traffic lights; the City of Toronto has been having then decorated by artists, This one just has the same design all the way round, but it does brighten up the corner. Every intersection with lights -- a new artistic style for you to think about.

The mailboxes are covered with postal codes, the idea being to discourage tagging, People still tag the grey bottoms, though.

E. Adam G., Alan Mays, Gisela Plewe, Steve Bucknell and 10 other people have particularly liked this photo

Elephant and Castle ?
You're sure you're not in London ;-)

The fake British pub is still popular here, Gerrit. The classic Canadian version of the pub, where you sat down and swilled draught beer as if they were going to stop making it tomorrow, has disappeared.

How great to see such bright and cheerful street furniture...............they're delightful..!! I also love the bright red traditional telephone box and the yellow fire hydrant.

Most fire hydrants here also sport a three-foot long yellow arm that projcets upwards so they can be found in the snow, Keith.

Eye-boggling! And you call it "sane design" ... :-)

Whoops -- "same". Toronto isn't that sane. Consider its devotion to the Maple Leafs.

Interesting that if one can draw one's eyes from the foreground - er - art, the grids repeat on the telephone booth and bricks of the building, plus some shadows on it, and then the glass and steel tower off in the distance. And then there's that elephant... Not to mention the half-pedestrian. And the yellow fireplug (aren't all fireplugs required to be red by law?) Actually, all that buffoonery is to say that ther's a lot to look at and the picture is pleasing.

Thanks. Bob. Yellow is supposed to be more visible. Except it isn't in the winter, but the big problem in the winter is that they get covered in snow (often from ploughs). Whence the yellow arm I mentioned to Keith.

The red in the foreground is corresponding with the red telephone cell in the background. It's very nice composed in this way. And your lines and angles are great as ever ! Good Morning, John !

Beautiful composition and colours. I also thought the image was taken in Great Britain!

Thanks, Rainer. There are probably more red telephone boxes in Toronto now than in the UK.

Nice to see the homely red telephone box. I think I might prefer tags to the all over patterns on the post boxes and the switch box.

Most of the switch boxes are more interesting than this, Jean. By-laws requiring tags to be removed probably had a lot to do with Canada Post's decision. You still get bills posted on them, though.

Trick! Also thought this was London...looking closer that phone box has an absurd quality..

Especially, Denis, as it's probably non-functioning.

What the street would be without these accessoires.

It would be dull, Gisela. Without street furniture and advertising Toronto's streets are bland.
