Petrified Forest National Park 2321a

Having seen petrified wood in other places, I was expecting a park that just looked like strange rocks. I was more more impressed with the park than I expected! It was startling to see how much the area looked like an actual forest of long dead trees. This plaque explains the geology that resulted in the petrified trees.

This looked surprisingly like a tree that has just been cut in various sections that had rolled down a hill.

Campground at Lyman Lake State Park, from Rattlesnake Point. The park had very nice facilities, and I didn't know prior to staying there that it had an extensive display of petroglyphs (see azstateparks.com/Parks/LYLA/index.html)
