Are the palms in the preserve the native California palm?

Yes, I double-checked while there, they are Washingtonia filifera, My understanding is that they are the only type of palm native to California.

Cool! I was surprised to find out there even _was_ a native California palm. I thought of palms as Old World.

There's actually two variations on the Washingtonia palms that are both native to this broad area (including Mexico), but my understanding is that only one is native to Calif.

Unfortunately, very few know that those 'gracious' palms seen throughout California are not native and are not good for the environment (no shade and too much water).
