Rotterdam public art – Cascade (# 0243)

Rotterdam public art – Cascade (# 0243)
I find this sculpture easier to appreciate through the descriptions of it, than I did in person – but that may be because it was cold, windy, and rainy when I saw it.

Cascade (see link below) is an 8 meter (26’) tall representation in polyester of barrels oozing oil with loose human-like figures seemingly clinging to (or dependent on) the oil.

At various places I heard it mentioned as a critique on consumerist culture. The use of ‘oil’ in the representation is particularly important since Rotterdam is the site of major oil refineries.
