Obviously, I took the photo for the sign.

Turney’s Trading in downtown Gallup – I searched around and could only find tidbits about the store. Apparently the store was started in the 1950’s and has been in various locations, all downtown. They do sell items created by native American tribes in the general area, but it appeared that the store is not owned by native Americans. I found no comment about the sign.

Looks like one of the trading posts located all across the Rez back in the day. They dealt in practically everything, and would also act as pawnbrokers--how they ended up with lots of Navajo jewelry. Nearly all the traders were Anglo, IIRC, and some were considerably less honest than others.
