Cumbres Pass station of the Cumbres & Toltec Railroad. Cumbres Pass is the highest point on the railroad (10,022 ft) and the climb to the pass from Chama, NM required helper locomotives. The facilities at the pass were built in about 1880 to provide water for the locomotives (steam) as well as to provide a turn-around point for the helper locomotives.
