One hint of the complex history of the city was the size of the older buildings in the downtown area; one wouldn't expect a town of 8000 to have had a need for a hotel of this size. From what I could piece together, this was originally the Emerson Hotel which had opened in 1923. Like most downtowns, the downtown area was largely abandoned and much of it destroyed in the "urban renewal" days of the 1960's, but fortunately this was saved and onverted into senior citizen housing in 1972.
