I spent no time in Oakland when we passed through in 2007. Just drove south past town and saw nothing of the place. I like the look of the downtown, at least this part of it, though it makes me wonder about the structural stability of this type of building in that part of the world. That's a lot of very old brick.

It survived the Loma Prieta earthquake that flattened the freeway which is only about 5 blocks away. I'm sure there has been extensive retrofitting since then.
