I've wanted to go to Ely, mainly because I've wanted to go to a national park near there. Haven't made it to either yet. This looks like a typical Nevada town.

I'd rank it above 'typical'. It's got more tourist accommodations than similar, good camping nearby, and yet not 'touristy', fairly 'authentic' feeling. I always enjoy it. Great Basin NP is well worth a trip.
