Tonopah 3937ax
Tonopah and the area south of it have a long history of mining and exploration, but also have a modern history of strong connection to the Cold War. Nellis Air Force Range (see nearby picture) runs from near Tonopah, all the way down to just north of Las Vegas -- a distance of about 200 miles. This is the area where new secret aircraft are tested, where the nuclear bomb tests after WWII were conducted, and is the location of the super-secret military 'area 51'. Like much of rural Nevada, Tonopah's economic history is cyclic, though apparently not as cyclic as some of the other parts of the state. The mining industry was successful from the late 1800's into the early 20th century, with continuing activity into apparently the 1950's. Income from military families picked up after that and helped carry the area until the Cold War ended in the latter parts of the 20th century. The town now has many abandoned buildings, but it definitely continues to have an active, working population.

As the nearby pictures will show, there's quite a bit to explore in the area. Unfortunately there's one drawback to exploring the Tonopah area -- for some reason there are almost no good campgrounds convenient to Tonopah. Thus I've been through the area a number of times, but the only times I've stayed there to explore were in the winter -- there's a good motel there.

There is BLM land nearby, so yes one could, but I prefer to camp where there are at least a few other campers nearby. I've too often seen teens use local camping spots as places to party, so I want some other adults within shouting distance.

I'd do that sort of camping if traveling with others, but I'm always out on my own! Maybe I should find a dog companion?

My reason for never carrying a gun is that I fear I'd get angry at someone whose harassing me on the road in their high-end car, and decide to harass back!

I just sold my Honda Element and bought a new Subaru Forester -- much better mileage, a little less interior space, more fun to drive, AND has covered cargo space...

The other thing that's kept Tonopah from drying up and blowing away completely is that it's on US 95, about halfway between Vegas and Reno. So there's definitely a highway-related service economy.

True, but my sense is that road has much less travel than it used to. Many decades ago there seemed to be some serious competition between Reno and LV, and thus lots of traffic on the route. It seems now that LV is almost a separate state on its own and the traffic between the two has reduced.

There's still enough traffic that 95 isn't my favorite highway! Lots of the in-state business now goes by air, too. Southwest has several flights daily between Vegas and Reno, and they're always full. The state has a contract with them such that state employees could fly one-way for (IIRC) $39--can't drive for that! And the businessmen, accountants, lawyers, etc. will routinely make day trips by air.

Our Congresscritter has also achieved passage of a bill that formally states the intention to ultimately extend I-11 from Vegas to Reno. (It's already been authorized between Phoenix and Vegas, more-or-less replacing US 93.) My son may live to see it-- ;)

I suspected that a lot of the traffic had shifted to flying.

Didn't know there were plans for an I-11, I just looked it up in Wikipedia. From AZ to LV makes sense, with much of it already built. Every time I've been on 95, the traffic from North LV to about Yerington (alt 95) or a little south of Fallon has been relatively light. The worst area in my experience is from Reno north to Susanville.
