San Bernardino sadness

San Bernardino sadness
This is an older picture (posted originally in 2012) depicting the largely failed attempts to revitalize downtown San Bernardino. Though it is about 3 miles north of the location of today's (12/2/2015) massacre of 14 killed and 17 wounded, the picture seems appropriate for today.

I found the massacre to be particularly sad because the shootings, happening just 5 days after shootings in Colorado, are such a reminder of our country's inability to do anything about either the access to weapons or the mental health needs that result in mass shootings.

But that they happened in San Bernardino adds to that sense of sadness. The town is in many ways emblematic of contemporary American politics -- a town economically bankrupt and struggling to stay alive thanks to the damages of decades of culture and economy destroying national neoliberal political policies.

I wondered how close this event was to you. This is happening with such frequency now that a person starts to go numb to it. It's just another event in the background. And the worst part is I don't see that changing anytime soon.

Update: It subsequently became evident that the shooters had been stockpiling weapons and explosives and that this was something far more than a simple workplace dispute. How much further, though, remains unknown.

This is particularly close to me because any trip from PS to the LA area requires going through San Bernardino and I often go into San Bernardino (60 miles) to catch a Metrolink train to LA. Having lived in SoCal for close to 20 years, I also have many regular contacts who have a personal history and family in San Bernardino/Redlands. They haven't released the names of victims yet, but given that I taught the sorts of students who would end up working in public health, I'm expecting that some former students may be among the victims.
