The northwest end of the road through the Valley of the Gods (see adjacent) comes out on UT 261, at the bottom of the Moki Dugway. The Moki Dugway is an unpaved, narrow, section of road that climbs 1100 feet up this bluff in 3 miles. The road was originally built by a mining company for hauling uranium. There doesn't appear to be any mining going on around here, but much of the area is protected in various ways (which many Utahans don't like). But about 40 miles south is a huge coal operation in Arizona, and there is petroleum in Utah just south of Hovenweep.
