Tucked in a small valley, almost hidden from view, a small trailer court in Grassy Butte, ND. Like many more trailer courts I would see that day, the court was very close-packed with very little room between trailers. This is the housing used by workers in the oil fields.

I talked with some people who had grown up in the area during a trip through here last year. They said real estate had gone insane, and that people were being priced out of their homes. I saw a lot the suggested North Dakota just wasn't ready for this boom, and that they hadn't figured out exactly what to do with it except just keep drilling.

That was a problem just traveling in the area. I couldn't camp on this trip, but motel rooms when you got within a 100 miles of the area were up to exorbitant prices (Motel 6 for $120) and there were plenty of online comments about rooms not being taken care of.

It sure felt like a modern day version of what you read about happening in the Western mining towns in the late 1800's/early 1900's. Unfortunately, in modern times we're able to be cover more territory with more toxicity more quickly.
