Pawnee National Grasslands, CO oil (0086)

Pawnee National Grasslands, CO oil (0086)
Oil/gas drilling at Pawnee National Grass(gas)lands in northeast Colorado, with wind turbines in the distance. When I first visited the Grasslands in 2002 it was very rare to see any traffic; the large version of the picture will show six vehicles on the road. The grasslands are administered by the US Forest Service.

It doesn't seem like it was that long ago that we were talking about permanent shortages in natural gas. Now, thanks to stuff like this, it's plentiful enough that we can flare off methane without a second thought.

The juxtaposition with the windmills is fascinating. There's been some talk about tapping a shale reservoir downstate near one of our big windmill farms, which would lead to similarly interesting photos. I think market conditions have slowed a lot of that down.

I hadn't thought about it until now, but the juxtaposition of windmills and gas operations here is probably related to it being easier do these sorts of gas operations in areas where they aren't easily and daily seen by the general public. There are oil wells in Beverly Hills and their operations are microscopically watched, which probably isn't the case out here. My understanding is that the rapid increase in natural gas production is due to the largely unregulated increase in fracking technology. We know that some fracking waste was unintentionally released in the flooding of the Platte -- I wonder where the fracking waste from here is disposed?
