On River Road in Little Missouri National Grasslands. Though River Road is unpaved, it is well-graded and provides a very scenic view of the badlands along the Little Missouri river of western North Dakota. This is at a point early in the road that is still predominantly prairie.

Not to be forgotten in the Pawnee National Grasslands are the many Minuteman missile sites, remnants of the Cold War. Each site is about the size of the lot for a small house and, during the Cold War, contained one Minuteman missile with a nuclear warhead.

Looking south across the Pawnee National Grass(gas)lands, the electrical lines in the foreground appeared to be part of the wind turbine installation. In the large version of the picture you'll see three drilling derricks stretched along the right side of the road, a tanker truck at the first curve, and the bare outlines of a burning flare in the distance.

Oil/gas drilling at Pawnee National Grass(gas)lands in northeast Colorado. When I first visited the Grasslands in 2002, there were neither oil exploration nor wind turbines in the grasslands, and you could spend hours without seeing another person. The grasslands are administered by the US Forest Service.
