Mt Pilatus, Switzerland, late 1960's

Mt Pilatus, Switzerland, late 1960's
When I was stationed in Germany in 1967-68, an area I visited a number of times was the parts of Switzerland just across the German border. Getting there was easy on our 4 day weekends, and it provided a quick and easy opportunity to get into less densely populated areas with astounding scenery. Lucerne was usually my base, since it was easy to get there by train, the city itself was very walkable, and had good transit. One of the things that most impressed me about Lucerne was the Mt. Pilatus area above the city. The Mt. Pilatus area was reached by taking a very steep cog railroad part way up, and then a gondola on up to a lodge area -- for someone raised in the American south, gondolas, snow, and very steep mountains combined to be a wondrous adventure.

This is of a gondola arriving at the top -- note the very steep snow-covered trail going up the mountain behind the gondola station.

Pictures in this set (Military Years) are from when I was in the military, from 1967-1970. All photos were originally slides, a friend spent very many hours restoring those slides to being viewable. Best viewed as part of the Military Years set.
