Silver City, NM mining

Taking one of the alternate routes from the cliff dwellings back towards Silver City, you come to one of the world's largest copper mines -- the Chino Mine. The Silver City area has been mined extensively for various metals since the late 1800's, and open pit mining at this site has been going on since the early 1900's. The mine is expected to close within the next few years, and there is debate about how to reclaim the mine area.
