This and adjacent picture are of the open pit copper mines that are west of Ely, near the town of Ruth. At one point some years back this was one of the largest open pit copper mines in the U.S.. The mines have been largely abandoned at times, and then restarted a few years ago. Last I heard, with the downturn in the economy, they were laying off. This picture is of an abandoned mill.

Dunno the details, but when we drove past last month it was operating--at least there were haul trucks running on the roads!

This is the old part which has been quite for years. The last few times I've been there the new operations to the west and south of this point were in operation. There was even, a couple of years ago, talk of rebuilding the NNRY link to the UP and and hauling ore out that way, though that discussion fell flat.
